Martian Dance Invasion!
10:32pm 21/06/2011
  Hi ever'body!

I'm starting a new personal blog to replace my LiveJournal, in an attempt to get myself journaling regularly again (i also have been hearing that regular blogging is another way to get your name out there as a potential writer-for-hire, so....ok?). It'll eventually get a nice non-template design and links to portfolio type stuff and become my unofficial home page, but for now, please enjoy:

Goddamn, this couple made my day
05:57pm 21/04/2010
Walking into the Metro Mart on Van Buren, i passed a 60-something man in overalls. He had stopped in the sliding doorway and had turned to face the outside.

"Hey, where'd you go?"

His wife, whom i could not see, yelled back at him. "I'M HAVING A CIGARETTE!"

He scoffed. "Fine time to have a cigarette!"

"Oh, shut up!"

They eventually made their way into the store, and did not cease scolding each other at top volume.

I am thoroughly convinced that this is the most in love couple i have run into in weeks, if not months. Romance fights on.

Amber's $50 Challenge
08:30am 09/03/2010
xiuxiuvinyl posted the video for the Pet Shop Boys' "Always On My Mind" last night on FB, saying "if you can explain this video to my satisfaction, i will send you $50 USD." That was a challenge i felt a need to step up to. Here's a dissection with visual aids.

New Cultural Zero blog entry

I think i write shit like this because somewhere in my head i'm convinced that cleverly snarky turns of phrase will somehow get me chicks. I know, it's asinine. Anyway, here's my cautionary tale about how wallowing too deeply in irony can result in an increased tolerance and appreciation for the very trash that is destroying our culture. Like juggalos.

Another Riverwest Fire. Goody.
10:37am 30/09/2009
  http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/62846317.html

A Milwaukee police officer and a Riverwest bartender helped rescue four people from a burning home early Wednesday.

The bartender first noticed garbage cans had caught fire at a house in the 900 block of E. Wright St. just after 2 a.m., according to the Milwaukee Police Department.

The flames at some point jumped to the house and the bartender started banging on the door of the home, police said.

About the same time, a police officer on patrol saw the fire, ran up to the house and broke down the back door, police said. The officer helped get the owner of the home out of the blaze and other arriving officers helped to get three other occupants out of the three-unit dwelling, police said. No one reported serious injuries.

Firefighters say the blaze caused about $20,000 worth of damage to the home. Police said the fire appears to have been intentionally set and they're investigating the blaze.

My friend Shana had apparently JUST moved into this building over this past weekend. Just unpacked, just settled in, and BOOM! Everything gone.

Her best friend Vega has set up a paypal account for donations. I think Liz K. is the only other person on my friends list who knows her, and i realize that money's tight for all of us, but if you feel like you want to help, you can check out Vega's blog here.

Can't help but think of the fire at Clarke Foods last year and about Lindsey and me watching the place burn after getting Science! safely out of her apartment next door. What the hell, Riverwest? This is Milwaukee, not Detroit.

  Hi!

I have many things to discuss! I was on tour, and it was great! Other things are neat too!

But all i can think about this morning is how much respect the Packers are garnering from the mainstream press entering Week 1 of the NFL Season!

Packers listed at #3 on SI.com's week 1 Power Rankings

Several SI.com experts place GB in the Super Bowl this year

A few ESPN.com prognosticators have done the same.

Also, at some point in one of these previews i caught someone referring to the NFC North as the deepest division in football this year.

GOD DAMN I CAN'T WAIT FOR SUNDAY!

Uninsured conservative town hall activist hurt in fight, asks for donations to help pay medical bill

Yesterday, about 200 conservative activists held a protest outside the SEIU office in St. Louis. Gladney was there -- bandaged and in a wheelchair -- as a featured guest. Some of the activists held signs that read, "Don't Tread on Kenny." Reader R.D. alerted me to this tidbit in the local news account of the protest:

Gladney did not address Saturday's crowd of about 200 people. His attorney, David Brown, however, read a prepared statement Gladney wrote. "A few nights ago there was an assault on my liberty, and on yours, too." Brown read. "This should never happen in this country."

Supporters cheered. Brown finished by telling the crowd that Gladney is accepting donations toward his medical expenses. Gladney told reporters he was recently laid off and has no health insurance. [emphasis added]

Wait, the conservative opponent of health care reform, fighting (literally) to defeat a plan that would bring coverage to those who lose their jobs, lost his coverage because he got laid off?

I'm not in a position to say whether Gladney sustained genuine injuries or whether he's exaggerating for 15 minutes of Fox News fame and a lucrative out-of-court settlement.

Either way, the new right-wing cause celebre needs to take up a collection to pay for his medical bills because he doesn't have health insurance. It's a fascinating sign of the times.

It should be noted that Gladney's injuries were sustained at a town hall meeting where he was engaging in the same shouting-down tactics that are being organized basically by health care companies and their paid representatives (also known as Republican Congressmen).

So awesome. Starts an anti-government-run health care shouting match, gets hurt in a fracas that he may or may not have started, then solicits donations because he doesn't have health insurance due to job loss.

C'mon, man, pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Don't go looking for handouts. It's the American way.
